Laurence John Maher has brought his unique marque of California cool to the Queen City. As a former student of psychology and philosophy at Citrus C.C. and Cal State L.A., he is astute in understanding the complexities of the human condition and how people are unified through the arts. This has resulted in Laurence naturally becoming the linking strand between a host of musicians, poets, painters, and dancers.

He has been a man of renaissance since the moment he left his West Covina upbringing at 27 to pursue his passion and calling to a life laced in music. In some ways, his pursuit can be seen as a nod to his high school days at Bishop Amat where the motto commanded a sense of honor in living a life that modeled giving, caring, and being open to the plan for one’s life.

This choice to go after his dreams is one that opened doors and led to collaborative efforts with local figures on the arts scene such as Grammy Award winner Ashlin Parker, Stephen Gordon, Ocie Davis, Chad Thompson, Brandon DeGraffenreid, and Corey McClurre. In further honing his experiences, he also worked with the renowned poets C.P. Maze, Quentin Talley, Jaycee Cowin, Borris ‘Bluz’ Rogers, and Tavis Brunson.

Laurence uses his charisma and musical prowess to give breath to bodies of innovation such as a jam session which he called Heavy Rotation. With his collective, he has opened for John Legend, WAR, The Pimps of Joytime, The Secret Army, and more. Additionally, he plays regularly with Charlotte area bands The Chemist, The Carbonari, and Asleep InThe Weeds.

The NoDa Arts District of Charlotte has also benefited from Laurence’s innate managerial skills that resulted in him coordinating numerous music events, facilitating jam sessions, booking bands, organizing promotions, serving as sound engineer, hosting, and still fitting in time to perform as either a vocalist, drummer, guitarist, bassist, or poet. He also admirably utilizes his time as an artist/mentor at a non-profit afterschool program housed at Behailu Academy.

Unlike other uproots, Laurence has embraced Charlotte as a home away from home and maximized his opportunities by doing so. He has fit in with the arts scene perfectly and comfortably. Laurence has so far collected a great deal of interesting stories along the way and there are only many more in the journey ahead. Undoubtedly, his recent induction into The L.R.C. will be fundamental in his life’s chapter on wildness.
